If you are visiting relatives over the holiday season you might find yourself in houses bereft of toys. Here are a couple of ways to entertain your toddler or preschooler with simple stuff you can find in a relatives kitchen cupboards.
The activities Goblin and I play develop fine motor skills as well as hand eye coordination. I call this type of activity an "Eyore activity". On Eyore's birthday in 'Winnie the Pooh' he receives a popped red balloon and an empty honey jar and he delights in putting the balloon into the pot and taking it out again. It never ceases to amaze me how much simple activities like picking something up with tongs and putting them in a pot entertains my little man.
The first activity we play uses a tea strainer and corn on the cob holders (maize forks). He simply picks up the holders with the tea strainer and puts them in the pot. Tongs or chopsticks would also work for this activity.
Our second activity uses a steamer pan, but a colander would also work. Goblin simply threads the kebab sticks through the holes in the pan (straws can be used instead of kebab sticks - especially if you aren't supervising).
To make it a little more challenging we use the tea strainer to poke the kebab sticks through the holes.

When i was younger we used to visit my great aunt and she used to let us play with a metal tea pot, plastic cups and a tray. I have fond memories of playing with it for hours.
