The Sunday Parenting Party

Taming the Goblin

Its time for the Sunday Parenting Party. Please link up your parenting posts and take a look at the others linked up. This week I am linking the following:
******
(Goblin is 37 months)
At this time of year Pinterest and most good kids activity blogs start getting filled up with wonderful creative Christmas ideas. Also around this time of year I start feeling panicky and inadequate as a parent. The pressure to do big creative Christmas based projects with my son takes hold. I get carried away by seeing complicated Christmas activities and think that my child needs me to do this for him. And then when I don't get round to it, or he isn't interested I feel like I am failing him. I completely forget to look at my child and what my child enjoys doing and let him take the lead.
Fortunately as usual Hublet is there to be the voice of reason. This time he didn't even have to say anything. He just showed me how daft I was being with one simple act.
Goblin was taking a bath and he asked for a boat. In my normal - "I must create" way I started making extravagant plans of how I could construct a boat - like the ones we did here.
Meanwhile Hublet disappeared for two minutes and came back with what you see in the photo above. A simple Tupperware tub with a drinking straw duct taped to the side and a duct tape sail on the top. Goblin was ecstatic  His boring bath was transformed into small world play. And I was left sitting there realising that three year olds don't need elaborate projects and things that take days to plan. Its the little things that help us connect with our children and remind them on a daily basis how much we love them.

  1. What a great post! Dads are so great! They don't get caught up in the extravagance.

  2. Thank you for the feature! I feel honored. Especially because I really learn so much from reading your blog. I'm craft-challenged and your project and sensory play idea make me feel like there's hope for me yet!

  3. Thanks for featuring my post! And I love your message about getting carried away creating the perfect activity...my kids seem to enjoy the "accidental" activities or the ones that I come up with on the fly the most. I'm going to try to remember this as we start in on the Christmas madness!

  5. I'm always worried when I leave my son and his dad alone - fearing they will do nothing but watch TV all day. They don't do play dates or arts and crafts but when I come home they have always created slides out of blankets or forts out of umbrellas. Dads are great in seeing the potential in the little things.
